It was published in the Winter 06/07 issue of the Search Engine Standard Magazine — it’s about the challenges of setting up a SEO team for a company – corporate SEO. Before reading this article, I always thought there is a void between the IT department, the Marketing team and the Corp Comm group when we come to online marketing, be it search marketing or email marketing.

Now I know the answer lies in the SEO team. Every company that wants to be successful in the new economy must have a SEO team, period.

What Constitutes A Professional SEO Team

You will need to have a SEO Manager overseeing a team of specialists:

SEO Technician
Expert in HTML, CSS, keyword research, link structure

Content Builder
Creates search-friendly and link-friendly content web pages and blogs

Link Builder
Link request, directory submit and social media marketing

Not all companies will have one specialist per role. Smaller companies may have a manager and a specialist to shoulder all the above responsibilities. Bigger corporations may have several teams reporting to team leaders who in turn report to the SEO manager.

So, now you see that even though SEO may be simple, it can be laborious and require much time, effort and patience.

Thinking of Setting Up a SEO Team or a SEO Company?

Here’s a highly recommended Search Engine Marketing Kit from SitePoint. This kit will help to get organized and provide the guidance to set up your very own SEO team to offer both SEO and SEM services.

Is there a Ten Commandments for Web Startups?

Since I specialize in SEO business, my business model and 10 commandments may not be applicable to most people who intend to start a web business.

So, I started googling for the tips and guide on starting a successful business online.

With the information I gathered, I discovered that there were certain things in common with all the successful online business and the things that these business owners had done.

At the top of my web startups’ Should-DO list are:

Stay focused, stay narrow

Know your customers

Target the Long Tail

You will find a more comprehensive list of what you need to do to start online business at the Ten Rules for Web Startups by Evan Williams, former CEO of Odeo and co-founder of Blogger.

#1: Be Narrow
#2: Be Different
#3: Be Casual
#4: Be Picky
#5: Be User-Centric
#6: Be Self-Centered
#7: Be Greedy
#8: Be Tiny
#9: Be Agile
#10: Be Balanced
#11 (bonus!): Be Wary
Overgeneralized lists of business “rules” are not to be taken too literally. There are exceptions to everything.
