Better SEO Ranking in Google than Yahoo

SEO Ranking UpOnce upon a time, when I was still new to SEO ranking, it was easier to get my website listed in Yahoo’s SERP than Google’s.

That was about 3 years ago.

Nowadays, it seems “easier” for me to get web pages ranked in the top 10 of Google results. I usually get my targeted keywords ranked higher in Google than in Yahoo.

And I am observing a pattern here. Yahoo tends to favour pages which are heavily optimized for the meta tags and web page content. Usually, on-page optimization with a higher keyword density will get you closer to the top. And there more number of times you use the exact keywords in your web page, the higher the chance of getting top placement.

As for Google, I see more emphasis on off-page optimization such as the quantity and quality of backlinks and LSI.

Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI)

Since last year, I’ve been using a lower keyword density for all my pages. Instead, I use more related words and variants. I believe Google has implemented LSI in their algorithms. Hence, my page do better in Google than in Yahoo.

As I am become more experienced in the art of SEO copywriting, I find it natural to write in a way that help me rank well in Google. Writers do not repeats the same terms too many times in an article. Usually, better writers will look up a thesaurus so that different words are used to convey the same meaning and to make the reading interesting.

What is good for Google may not be good for Yahoo. And this usually applies to relatively new website. After some time(years), when you have sufficient backlinks, your website should do well in both Google and Yahoo. The bigger your website, the quicker you’ll find your website rank well in both search engines.
