Is SEO Training really necessary?

I have been conducted several SEO training workshops and realised that many people do not think they need to know about search engine optimization. Otherwise, these people would say that they already know what SEO is all about.

I started organizing SEO workshop with the intention to provide training to web designers. Over the past 2 years, I have seen many websites done by web designers in Singapore (and also from around the region) without paying any attention to search engine guidelines. Here’s the 3 most common issues:

  • Omission of TITLE tag or generic description with the use of targeted keywords
  • Ommission of DESCRIPTION meta tag or did not include targeted keywords
  • Identical TITLE tag in all pages

That’s a good observation. Down here in Australia, I have come across some of that too. The ones that need it the most - the developers like the ones you mention - probably think they can pick up the skill for free.

They have the dilemma that they cannot go back to a client and tell them that they have now learnt SEO and can improve their site, certainly not for free.

    Hi Ash,

Thank you for reading my rant.

Learning SEO for free is learning the “hard” way. It’s easier to pay an expert to get the right knowledge and avoid the many pitfalls.

Even if the “enlightened” web designer could not go back to an existing client to re-do the website, at least he can do a better job for the next client. The reality is that many web designers in this region do not think they need to make a website search engine friendly because the client did not ask for it.
