Optimize Keywords for Your Website and PPC

This is an idea that I hatched a week ago.

If you have ever read about selling your stuff using Google PPC, aka Adwords, or Yahoo’s Overture then you’ve probably come across this advice from the gurus that goes like this…

“Use high demand keywords that is not as highly competitive.”

And there are several tools for you to do search for keywords with demand and competitiveness report, the most popular being Wordtracker. However, I found that it very very difficult to discover new high demand keywords that is not as competitive.

Then again, if I ever found such keywords, shouldn’t it be more cost effective in the long run to build a new website or a new page on my existing website and let the search engines rank the page favourably.

This is how I tested my idea last week.

I have been researching to build a website on express bus travel, particular between Malaysia and Singapore. So keywords like “express bus” and “express bus travel” would valuable to me. These are not very competitive keywords so there is a good chance of getting good listing within 3 to 6 months.

I registered a new domain, MyExpressBus.com last week. Spent nearly a whole day writing the homepage and installing the reciprocal link manager. I carefully crafted the content to optimise for keywords “express bus”, “express bus services” and “express bus travel“. I focused the content on luxurious express bus services between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur - I had first-hand experiences travelling on a number of these services. I also added a few partner links “to feed the spiders”.

I submitted manually to Google and Yahoo. And then I used WebCEO to submit to other free search engines.

Two days ago, I wrote about this new website on my blog, http://www.timmguru.com.

Today, if you do a Yahoo search for

  • “express bus malaysia”
  • “express bus singapore”
  • “express bus thailand”
  • “express bus guide malaysia”
  • “express bus travel malaysia”

You’ll see MyExpressBus.com at the top of the search results. However, this new website is not yet ranked on Google.

So, it seems to me this could be a cost effective way to promote your website on search engine without paying for the PPC, namely Overture and Google.

However, if you are in a hurry to promote your products or services then Google Adwords is the best way. Otherwise, with time on your side, say 3 to 6 months, you may consider to build yourself a theme focus website using your desired keywords and attract more than just search engine traffic.
